Nature of work

A church secretary works in the administrative office of a church.

Duties and Responsibilities

    A church secretary performs the following duties:

•    Arrange schedule of board or committee meetings
•    Attend and document meetings
•    Handle correspondences
•    Handle incoming and outgoing phone calls
•    Maintain an organized system of records and files
•    Organize wedding, baptisms, funerals and other church functions
•    Prepare announcements and calendar of activities
•    Prepare documents and reports as assigned

Requirements

1.    Education

A high school diploma is required to be employed as a church secretary. Advanced skills and training are advantageous.

2.    Knowledge

A church secretary must have a working knowledge of the following:

•    Church goals, structure, works and operations
•    Administrative procedures like record-keeping, word processing, presentations,  and audio transcription
•    English language including grammar, spelling and proper use of punctuations

3.    Skills and Abilities

A church secretary must possess the following skills and abilities:

•    Effective communication skills
•    Excellent computer and technology skills
•    Good people skills
•    Ability to multi-task


Earnings

The salary of a church secretary differs based on the person’s experience and skills, and the location of the church. The average annual pay is $29,900.
