A school secretary provides administrative and clerical assistance to school administrators, principals, teachers and other personnel of an educational institution.
Responsibilities
A school secretary may perform the following duties:
• Act as the receptionist
• Handle incoming and outgoing correspondences
• Maintain an organized system of all school-related records and files
• Prepare calendar of activities and schedule of the use of school facilities
• Prepare letters, memoranda, reports and presentations
• Receive and make phone calls
• Schedule meetings and appointments of the administrators and/or principal
• Screen requests, complaints and concerns addressed to the administrator and/or principal
Requirements
1. Education
A high school diploma is required to be employed as a school secretary. Supplemental secretarial courses and training are beneficial.
2. Knowledge
A school secretary must have a useful knowledge of the following:
• Administrative procedures like record-keeping, word processing, presentations, stenography and audio transcription
• Customer service principles and practices
• English language including grammar, spelling and proper use of punctuations
3. Skills
A school secretary must possess the following skills and abilities:
• Effective communication skills
• Excellent computer and technology skills
• Good interpersonal skills
• Ability to multi-task

The salary of a school secretary is based on the person’s experience and skills, and the school’s budget. The average annual pay based on studies is $28,120.
